Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic condition that causes high cholesterol levels leading to increased risk of early heart attacks. FH is diagnosed in adults with total cholesterol level >7.5mmol/L or LDL-cholesterol level >4.9mmol/L. High LDL-cholesterol is harmful to our body as it causes blood vessels blockage and high risk for heart attacks. The risk of getting early heart disease if a patient has untreated FH before 50years of age is high. There is 50% chance of passing the condition to our children. Thus, screening is important for family members of FH patients to test for high cholesterol levels and start medication early.
